.58 caliber. 39" barrel. NSN. Moderately oxidized metal, brass furniture, smooth walnut musket stock. Single shot muzzleloading percussion rifle musket with military ladder rear sight, Barleycorn combination front sight and socket bayonet lug, sling swivels on the upper band and triggerguard bow and a full-length "T&CG" maker marked jag head ramrod. Lock marked "BARNETT/LONDON" forward of the hammer with no {Crown} at the tail of the lock. Breech of barrel stamped with Birmingham commercial proofs and a pair of "24" gauge marks indicating .58 caliber. A small Sinclair, Hamilton & Co inspection mark of an "SH/C" in an oval is present on the top of the nocks form. Additionally a tiny "J.S" is stamped on the top of the comb, forward of the buttplate tang, in the location of other known Confederate viewer's marks. Several "JS" variants are known, including the famous "JS/{Anchor}" as well as both block and script "JS" marks in circles or ovals in this location. This is a new variant, not previously seen by this cataloguer, but is quite certainly as Confederate. The presence of Birmingham proofs on a barrel in conjunction with a Barnett lock, who was a London maker, is uncommon, but enough examples of Confederate purchased Barnett guns that were partially or entirely of Birmingham manufacture exist to not raise any red flags. The lock plate to snail (bolster) fit is quite good and does not suggest that the barrel or lock were changed. Good. Bore fair, moderately oxidized with some pitting and weak rifling that is mostly visible nearer the breech than at the muzzle. Metal with a moderately oxidized brown patina, some scattered surface roughness and evenly scattered moderate pitting, most obvious at the breech. Markings remain mostly clear in the metal, weaker in the wood. Mechanically functional lock. Wood with moderate wear and showing scattered bumps, dings and mars.
