Iron double-edged spearpoint blade with median ridge, spear-shaped ricasso, iron langets, brass ferrule riveted wooden shaft. With iron butt cap. 8 1/2 ft. (102 in.) overall, 13 in. blade.
A great example of the classic Richmond pike with the typical perfunctory brass guard. Cheap and quick to produce, pikes were produced across the South as a way to crudely arm recruits when firearms were in short supply. Pikes and lances were rarely used among Federal regiments as they were only effective in a charge and generally cumbersome in rough and forested terrain.
