A rare Confederate parole from Augusta, Georgia. Signed by Confederate Brigadier General Birkett D. Fry (1822-1891), who saw extensive service in the Eastern Theater. He was wounded at Seven Pines, Antietam, Chancellorsville, and finally at Pickett's Charge during the Battle of Gettysburg, where he was also captured. After his exchange, he was promoted to general in May 1864.
The parole was issued to Private S. I. Walker, listed as part of "Ramsey's Battery Regiment, Mississippi Vols." The document continues that, as "a Paroled Prisoner of the Army commanded by Gen. J.E. Johnston, [Walker] has permission to go to his home, and there remain undisturbed, on condition of not taking up arms against the United States." The verso is signed "Office Pro. Mar. Post Montgomery, Montgomery, Ala, May 10th 1865 / Reported this day Chas. Scott Capt, 8th Iowa Infty. Pro. Mar.”
