Confederate States Navy cutlass. N.p., n.d. Blade 18 5/8 in. Overall 24 1/2 in. long.
This enigmatic edged weapon, with the exception of its m1841 naval cutlass-style pommel, is almost identical to the m1832 artillery short sword, itself inspired by the French m1816 which in turn drew inspiration from the Roman gladius. The letters "CSN" and a fouled anchor to the reverse decorate the guard. An example with a similar hilt appears in Confederate Arms, alongside the caption "The mould for the guard of this sword is in the Chicago Historical Society" (Albaugh & Simmons, 120).
