Captured U.S. Navy bone handled knife. Blade stamped "U.S. Navy".
Obverse handle etched: "U.S.S. Cumberland. Sunk & Taken Prisoner. By (Merrimack) March 8 1862". Reverse handle etched "D. Potter C.S.N." above crossed Confederate flags.
An excellent captured relic from the Battle of Hampton Roads, also known as the Battle of the Monitor and Merrimack.
D. Potter was evidently a sailor aboard the CSS Virginia - the ironclad ram rebuilt from the remnants of the burned steam frigate USS Merrimack. The Virginia destroyed two ships of the Union flotilla, the USS Congress and USS Cumberland, from whence this relic came. Potter etched the details of their victory on his prize.
An excellent relic from a pivotal naval battle.
