Confederate Naval Cutlass. [Birmingham, England]: [Robert] Mole, n.d. Imported Charleston, S. C.: Courtney & Tennent, n.d. Stamped "Mole" to spine and "Courtney & Tennent / Charleston .S .C" to ricasso. Blade 19 1/2 in. Overall 24 3/4 in.
Gilbert Boudinot Tennant (1816-1879) of Courtney & Tennant traveled to England at the beginning of the Civil War to network with British manufacturers and procure their goods for Confederate inspection and use. This is surmised to be the origin of the cutlass by Mole, produced expressly for exportation to the Confederate States. The cutlass features a Patent Solid Hilt reminiscent of the British p1853 cavalry saber.
The guard is slightly deformed, else a fine example with a clean blade and guard and an unworn leather grip. The stamps are well-struck and legible.
