Confederate D-guard Bowie knife. [North Carolina]: [Louis Froelich], n.d. Blade 15 7/8 in. Overall 21 in. long.
The large and intimidating Bowie knife, perhaps the quintessential symbolic Confederate weapon, is a staple in Southern soldiers' portraits. Though the knives were as often as not the products of local artisans, this impressive D-guard evidences superior craftsmanship and is certainly the product of Bavarian immigrant Louis Froelich. Like other "Kenansville," "Froelich" or "Confederate States Armory" edged weapons, one need look no further than the distinguishing hilt, in this case featuring an oval guard which narrows into the D-shaped knucklebow. The wooden grip also bears period stampings, a trait observable in other examples produced at Kenansville; 3 appear to one side and a fourth, albeit light, is marked to the back.
Complete in its original leather scabbard. The blade and guard present dark patinas, with some pitting to the blade and wear along the edge, else remain in fine condition. The wooden grip exhibits a few cracks throughout.
