A CONFEDERATE FOOT‑ARTILLERY SHORT SWORD, ATTRIBUTED TO BOYLE, GAMBLE & McFEE

Richmond, Virginia, 1861-65. Cast brass hilt of high‑copper content formed in one piece with flat cross‑guard and integral ribbed grip (19 ribs); double‑edged blade of gladius form with a single 9 in. (23 cm) central, unstopped fuller on each face; peened tang. Overall: 24 1/4 in. (61.6 cm). Blade: 18 7/8 in. (47.9 cm).
Operating on Sixth Street, a block from the Richmond Armory, the partnership of Edward Boyle, Thomas Gamble, and Edward McFee produced a wide range of edged weapons for the Confederacy. Their foot‑artillery sword followed the French 1831 “gladius” model. Most examples are unmarked; the present piece conforms in every respect to the few known marked specimens that have established the Richmond firm as maker of this pattern.

A well‑preserved example of a scarce Confederate sidearm.
