Partly printed document completed in manuscript. Requisition for forage for private horses from Company K, Cobb's Legion Cavalry. Georgia, 1 September 1863. 2 pages, 10 1/2 x 8 1/2 in., matted and framed to 17 1/2 x 15 1/2. With photocopy of verso included.
A requisition from Cavalry Company K of Cobb's Legion for forage for its eleven horses for the month of September. The Company requested a total of 3,960 pounds of corn and 4,620 pounds of hay for its horses. Its final destination was camps in Virginia, and when it arrived, it had 2,772 pounds of corn, 1,100 pounds of hay, and 400 pounds of fodder left over.
This requisition was submitted by Capt. F.E. Eve. Francis Edgeworth Eve was was born on 15 August 1844 in Augusta, Georgia, making him just 17 years old when he enlisted as a private in Cobb's Legion. On 10 February 1863, he was elected as captain of Cavalry Company K and remained captain of the company even when it transferred to Phillip's Legion in 1864. Eve survived the war and lived in Augusta on his plantation until his death in 1908.
Prior to it being split up, Cobb's Legion was in the Battles of Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, and Cold Harbor. It participated in the Siege of Petersburg before transferring to Phillip's Legion, fighting in the Carolinas Campaign. Even though Company K transferred from one legion to another, the legion design was not practical for the Civil War, making the story behind this document incredibly fascinating.
