Highlighted in this lot is a trio of Civil War soldier photographs, housed in a modern case with cracked glass:

1. Bust-length oval vignetted albumen CDV of identified surgeon A.C. Benedict. N.p., 1864. Inscribed "A.C. Benedict M.D. / Surg. US. Vol" in period ink to the albumen itself, and "1864. / Abel Carter Benedict, surgeon, But LT Col / N.Y. Vol" in pencil to the paper mount.

Dr. Abel Carter Benedict (1836 - 1898) enlisted as an assistant surgeon on 9 August 1862 and was commissioned into the New York 1st Infantry before resigning to the Army Medical Corps on 19th February 1863. He would receive a promotion to surgeon on 16 September 1863 and to lieutenant colonel by brevet on 1 June 1865, reflected in the pencil identification. The double-breasted frock coat and shoulder board-clad Benedict wears a relaxed expression, with one eyebrow raised slightly.

2. Uncased sixth plate tintype of an infantryman.

In addition to his gold-gilt infantry insignia, the soldier sports an illegible pair of brass letters or numbers to his pinned Hardee hat. He clasps a bayonetted longarm before him in both hands. Housed in a patriotic "Constitution and Union" mat, albeit inverted.

3. Bust-length oval vignetted albumen CDV of an unidentified subject wearing a single-breasted jacket with military buttons. Hanover, N.H.: Henry Osgood Bly, n.d. Verso with photographer's imprint.

The young subject wears around his neck a small, bow-shaped ribbon with a with a white zigzag stripe and circular insignia at its center.

Additional photographs include:

4. Sixth plate tintype of 8th Massachusetts militiaman. Full leatherette case.

This tintype exhibits extraordinary clarity. Magnification reveals unambiguous Massachusetts state seals to the buttons of the subject's triple-breasted jacket. To a chain at his waist, he wears a diminutive rectangular locket containing a bust portrait in profile. In his lap, largely obscured by the mat, is a m1858 forage cap. Overall a very fine example.

5. Quarter plate daguerreotype of 4 female subjects. Full thermoplastic case.

The subjects, apparently 2 adults, an adolescent, and a young child, pose in a manor suggesting a familial relationship. Housed in a Berg 2-71, "Basket of Fruit and Vegetables" case.

6. Sixth plate tintype of a well-dressed gentleman. Full leatherette case.

7. Uncased quarter plate tintype of a young woman in a black dress.
