Brass cigar holder. Approx. length 1 in. WITH Manuscript pencil note which reads in full: "Cigar Holder / Taken from Captain's Tent [?] after battle at Port Royal S.C. Nov. 7/61 by ?? G. Adams attached to Steamer Susquehanna. / Jany 10/14."

 

The U.S.S. Susquehanna was part of the main fleet that arrived on November 7th and attacked the Confederate-held forts. Fort Walker was abandoned by mid-afternoon and crews went ashore and raised the Union flag.
