At the beginning of the war, A.L. Myers commanded the CSS Oregon (1861-62), a wooden sidewheel steamer that had been used as a mail carrier before she was seized to serve as a blockade runner. Quickly she was selected for military service and armed with cannons. She patrolled the Mississippi Sound and Pass Christian areas, engaging several times with the USS New London. On 27 February 1863, Myers formally enlisted and was commissioned as Acting Master in the Confederate Navy and joined the crew of the CSS Huntsville as part of the Mobile Squadron.
