Chromolithographed Certification of Service for Commander David W. Lee, Co. B, 149th Pennsylvania Infantry. Washington, D.C.: Army and Navy Record Co. ENHANCED WITH bust portrait of Abraham Lincoln and completed in manuscript. Handsomely matted and framed. Visible approx. 18 x 23 1/2 inches, framed to 29 x 31 in.

Beautiful example of a certification of service, presented in 1904 to the family of Commander David W. Lee of the 149th Pennsylvania Infantry, referred to as the “Bucktails” infantry. This gorgeously detailed manuscript depicts battle scenes on land and sea from the Civil War, supported by vine-wrapped columns. The nickname of the infantry, “2nd Bucktails,” is surrounded by flags with inscribed ribbons in the talons of a bald eagle, reading “Fraternity, Charity / and Loyalty.” Underneath the manuscript section is a bust portrait of Abraham Lincoln with the inscription “the Soldier’s Friend.”

The manuscript itself includes details of Commander Lee’s service, such as his muster date of 26 August 1863 and a listing of each battle his regiment engaged in, including the Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, and Weldon Railroad. Noted also are the two injuries he received during his service (at North Anna and the Siege of Petersburg), as well as his promotion to Commander and his eventual honorable discharge on 24 June 1865.

The commemoration was presented by Commander Lee to his wife Rachel and children Ellie, Charles, Samiel, Nellie, Ross, and Minni in October 1904.

A stunning and intricate commemoration of a soldier’s service.
