Lot of three CDVs of "pards," Civil War-era soldiers' closest companions or "partners." This collection offers a look at the deep-seated camaraderie of the Union rank and file, featuring both identified veterans and desirable theater-of-war backmarks.

This lot includes:

1. Double officer standing study albumen CDV. [ca. 1861-3]. Unclipped mount with no photographer's imprint. Features two officers in heavy double-breasted overcoats. The subject on the left rests his hand on his saber, while both men display the stoic, bearded countenances typical of mid-war field service.

2. Three NCO sitting study albumen CDV. Nashville, Tennessee: Morse’s Gallery of the Cumberland, [1864]. Photographer's imprint and 3-cent green revenue stamp to mount verso. Pencil notation to mount verso reads: "4th Corps." The subjects include two corporals and a sergeant, all wearing shell jackets with prominent chevrons. The 4th Corps was a mainstay of the Army of the Cumberland’s Western Theater campaigns.

3. Six-man group sitting albumen CDV. Newville, Pennsylvania: S. B. Smith, [1864]. Photographer’s imprint and 2-cent blue revenue stamp to mount verso. Period ink inscription to mount verso reads: "79th Penn. Vet. Inf. / 14th Army Corps." An extraordinary group sitting by S. B. Smith of Newville, Pennsylvania. This image captures six men, several of whom are smoking pipes or cigars, wearing a mix of slouch hats and civilian sack coats. These men likely represent "Veteran Volunteers" from the 79th Pennsylvania — the Lancaster County regiment — during the 1864 reorganization or furlough.

[Civil War, Union, Confederate] [Photography, Early Photography, Historic Photography, Daguerreotypes, Ambrotypes, Tintypes, Cased Images, Union Cases, Albumen Photographs, CDVs, Carte de Visites, Cartes de Visite, Carte-de-visite, Cartes-de-visite, CDV, Cabinet Cards, Stereoviews, Stereocards]

Tonal depth is excellent across the lot, particularly in the Nashville and Newville sittings. Mounts show typical age-related toning.
