[View on Bay St. Jacksonville, Fla. Rebel Prisoners at the Windows.] Albumen stereoview. [Jacksonville, Florida]: N.p., ca 1865. Period inked title to verso. Photographer: Sam Cooley.
An outdoor view of Bay Street in Jacksonville featuring several African American soldiers along the streetfront. Above them, in four windows in a building marked "Drugs & Medicines," are men identified as Confederate prisoners. Though unmarked, this is a known view attributed to notable photographer Sam Cooley.
Jacksonville was a key supply point for the Confederates, and, although no major battles occurred there, the city changed hands several times throughout the war. The image was likely captured late in the war, when several United States Colored Troop (USCT) regiments were stationed there.
