Camp Graham, Birney’s Zouaves, 23d. Regiment, P.V. Col. D.B. Birney, Lt. Col. Charles Wilhelm. Major. George C. Spear. Junior Major. John Ely. Hand-colored lithograph. N.p., [September or October 1861]. 14 x 9 ½ in., mounted and framed to 20 ½ x 16 in.
A gorgeous hand-colored lithograph of Camp Graham where the 23rd Pennsylvania Infantry mustered for its 3-year service. Since this lithograph is at Camp Graham, we can infer that it takes place sometime between September and October 1861. Amid rolling hills, dozens of rows of tents are neatly arranged with several companies of soldiers in Union blue mustering to attention in the foreground.
The 23rd Pennsylvania wore zouave uniforms during its first 6 months of service, from about April to October. After that, it transitioned to typical Union army garb. As part of the 23rd, soldiers faced battle between 1861 and 1864, including the Peninsula Campaign, the Battle of Fredericksburg, the Chancellorsville Campaign, the Battle of Gettysburg, the Battle of Cold Harbor, and the Shenandoah Valley Campaign.
