Sketch of the Rhode Island 2nd Infantry’s camp
Period pencil on paper
June 1861
Visible 15 x 5 ¼ in., mounted and framed to 18 x 8 in.
Inscription to recto bottom reads “June 1861.”
This sketch depicts the camp of the 2nd Rhode Island Infantry in June 1861, most likely when the regiment was first organized in Providence before marching to Washington, D.C., and taking part in the First Battle of Bull Run.
The camp is carefully rendered, with neat rows of tents stretching across the scene. At far right, a company of infantry is shown drilling and marching into view. At the center, a group of mounted officers ride energetic horses, while another body of soldiers approaches up the road behind them. On the left, the artist has labeled several tents: two marked “Co A” and three marked “Co H.” Company A was commanded by Captain C.G. Dyer, while Company H was led by Captain B.S. Brown and included the famed Kentish Guards, a militia regiment with roots reaching back to the Revolutionary War.
