A pair of m1840 musician's swords, produced by Ames Manufacturing Co. of Chicopee, Massachusetts:
1. Ricasso marked "Ames Mfg Co / Chicopee / Mass." Ricasso reverse stamped "US / ADK / 1858." Blade 28 1/8 in. Overall 35 1/4 in. long.
Complete in metal scabbard. Spots of pitting are apparent on the blade. The brass guard as well as the throat and drag of the scabbard exhibit a dark patina. The leather washer is absent.
2. Ricasso stamped with Ames scroll and "Made by / Ames Mfg Co / Chicopee / Mass." Ricasso reverse stamped "US / CSL / 1864." Blade 28 in. Overall 34 1/2 in.
Complete in a leather scabbard that displays extensive wear, lacking the drag entirely. The blade has a dark patina, and the guard and throat a deep, warm patina. The leather washer is absent.
Speculation regarding the use of musicians' swords in American military history is that they were first used during the American Revolution, carried by drummers and fifers. Musicians accompanied troops upon the field of battle and if the lines were flanked, they were called upon to defend themselves. Their sword was their only means to do so.
