Autograph letter signed by Major General Joseph Hooker (1814-1879), to Montgomery Meigs (1816-1892). Headquarters, Ringgold, Georgia, 29 November 1863. 1 page, 8vo. Integral address panel to verso alongside docketing. WITH Autograph note signed by Brig. General Montgomery Meigs ("MCM") to verso in pencil. [Chattanooga, Tennessee], [3 December 1863?].

An excellent war-date letter written from the field only days after the successful Battle of Lookout Mountain, a pivotal action in Grant’s decisive breaking of the Confederate siege of Chattanooga. In it, the writer addresses Brigadier General Montgomery Meigs from Chattanooga, where he had remained after recovering useful equipment from the battlefield.

In full: "I have found here in some Grist mills two valuable Engines of about 15 horse power in running order. I will have + transport to Chattanooga all but the boilers which are too large + heavy for transportation by ordinary wagons. Unless you can furnish some means of transportation for them I shall be obliged to destroy them. I shall remain here until tomorrow night (3oth). If you can deliver some means for their transportation please have it here prior to that time."

On the verso, Meigs records in pencil, in part: "Engines were not brought in..."

[Civil War, Union, Confederate] [Manuscripts, Documents, Letters, Ephemera, Signatures, Autographs]
