Outdoor view of Camp T.E. Ketchum. Albumen stereoview on bright orange publisher's card mount. Stockton, California: J. Pitcher Spooner, ca. 1870s–1880s. Mount recto bearing publisher imprint. Mount verso with Spooner's illustrated imprint.

Provenance: Holt-Atherton Pacific Center for Western Studies (collection stamp to verso, marked "DUPLICATE").

This image captures the main gated entrance to "Camp T. E. Ketchum," designated by a large wooden signboard suspended between upright timber posts. A group of uniformed militia men, officers, and civilian onlookers stand gathered along the split-rail fence line and entrance road leading toward field tents pitched beneath the California oak trees in the background.

Camp T. E. Ketchum served as a regional muster and summer encampment site for local California National Guard and militia units. It was named in honor of Major Thomas E. Ketchum, a prominent Stockton pioneer, Mexican-American War veteran, and Civil War officer with the 3rd California Infantry. Outdoor documentary stereoviews by pioneering Stockton photographer John Pitcher Spooner documenting local military gatherings are exceedingly scarce. This is a fantastic example of his work.

Very good. The prints exhibit sharp focal clarity and light, even age toning. The orange mount remains structurally solid and flat, with minimal edge wear, sharp corners, and clean typography and graphics across both recto and verso.
