A pair of Sacramento stereoviews published by E. & H.T. Anthony circa 1859-1862.
Each presented on a cardstock mount with publisher's label affixed to verso with series title ("California."), view title and 501 Broadway imprint.
1. No.75. St. Georges Hotel, Sacramento.
A street-level view of the St. Georges Hotel, an elegantly apportioned hotel in Sacramento. Interestingly, the Sacramento Union Newspaper ran an advertisement on 19 March 1860, near contemporaneous with this view, calling for riders to sign up for the Overland Express Route via Salt Lake City, offering wages of $50 a month. Applicants were encouraged to apply to William W. Finney at the St. George Hotel. Even though the ad ran only once, over 200 men applied for the role.
2. No. 68. Front Street, with the Levee, Sacramento. Provenance: Historical Society of Cheshire County, Keene, New Hampshire (stamps to verso).
Sacramento had been devastated by a flood on 10 January 1850, and in response, the first elected mayor, Hardin Bigelow, led the construction of the city's first levee in 1852. Indeed, the city was sometimes referred to as the "Levee City."
