Samuel T. Armstrong. ...A Proclamation for A Day of Public Thanksgiving and Praise. Letterpress broadside. [Boston]: N.p., dated 3 October 1835. 1 page, ## x ## in. Signed in type by Lt. Governor of Massachusetts Samuel T. Armstrong, and Secretary Edward D. Bangs. Checklist of American Imprints (1835) 32920.
WITH Manuscript note to lower margin, "First bell at X; second, at XI. It is proposed, on that day, to have a collection for Widow Sarah Stone. Sabbath School Teachers, + all of both sexes, who are willing to assist, are desired to meet at the house of the Superintendent of our Sabbath School, Mr. Gideon F. Thayer, + unite in making arrangements for the School, during the winter, + in devising measures for the general prosperity of this truly valuable institution."
Gideon F. Thayer was the founder and principal of the Boston school, Chauncy Hall. Founded in 1828, it was an elite academy for the children of wealthy Bostonians to prepare them for Harvard and other prestigious universities. Thayer remained at the head of the school until 1855.
A nice example of a 19th-century Thanksgiving Day proclamation enhanced by a localized marginal inscription.
VERY RARE. OCLC locates only 6 copies, held nearly exclusively in Massachusetts institutions, with the exception being the New-York Historical Society.
