A Transfer Printed Papier Mâché Snuff Box

Continental, Late 18th/Early 19th Century

Black lacquerware papier mâché snuff box with transfer print of a man, possibly a Corsican bandit or smuggler, armed with both a pistol and a shotgun standing in a landscape with a sailing ship visible in the distance.

Diameter 3 3/8 in. 

 

A folded, typewritten card contained within the box reads: Mary Schenck Dewey Born in Holland / First husband, Henry VanderSpeigel of N. J. / Second ' ' Major Daniel McEowen of N. J. / Third ' ' A Captain Elijah Dewey Bennington / Vermont / Captain Dewey died in 1818 / Mary Schenck Dewey died in 1820
