A painting showing two men meeting in the street and going through the newspaper. The man on the left, presumably some kind of street performer based on the materials he's carrying, is wearing a green jacket with a bowler hat and reading the paper. The man on the right is seen in a long coat with a top hat, clutching multiple copies of the paper, which he is perhaps trying to sell. He is pointing to something in the paper that the older man is holding, likely explaining a story or notice that is in that issue.
Mormile was mostly a genre painter, often depicting peasants in folkloric dress, but he additionally dabbled in vedute and Neo-Pompeian subjects. He studied under Giuseppe Mancinelli at the Academy of Naples, the city where he eventually opened a studio to produce art that would be exhibited throughout Italy.
This painting previously sold at Lyon & Turnbull (see Lot 119 of the 14 July 2022 auction).
