Bust-length portrait James "Jim" Henry Lane (1814-1866) in civilian clothes. Vignetted albumen CDV. Boston: J.E. Tilton & Co., 1861. Copyright statement to mount recto. Period ink inscription identifies Lane to mount recto and verso.

Jim Lane was a politician and military officer who is best remembered as the leader of the Jayhawkers during the Bleeding Kansas Era and during the Civil War.

A lawyer by trade, he became active in both the military and politics, commanding the 3rd and 5th Indiana Regiments in the Mexican-American War and representing Indiana in the U.S. Congress, where he voted for the Kansas-Nebraska Act. After his term expired, he relocated to the Kansas Territory and became deeply involved in the anti-slavery movement, and became a leader of the Jayhawker Free Soil group. In 1857, he co-founded Falls City, Nebraska, explicitly planning for the settlement to be an Underground Railroad station.

After the Free Soiler's success in achieving Kansas statehood, Lane was elected as one of Kansas's first U.S. Senators. After the Civil War erupted, Lane recruited Jayhawkers into the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Kansas Volunteer Infantry Regiments, together forming the "Kansas Brigade." They fought battles and skirmishes in Missouri and its borderlands. He was responsible for raids into Missouri and the notorious Sacking of Osceola.

Despite some debate over whether a sitting Senator could hold the rank of General, he was promoted to Brigadier General on 11 April 1862. In October 1862, he recruited the 1st Regiment Kansas Volunteer Infantry (Colored), notably the first African-American troops to fight for the Union. They first saw action at the Skirmish at Island Mound, where 30 of their number defeated 130 mounted Confederate guerrillas. In 1863, Land and his men were the target of Quantrill's Raid, largely a retaliatory action for Osceola.

Despite a controversial legacy, Lane remains the only sitting senator to serve as a brigadier general and an important figure in the western borderlands.
