Vignetted bust-length albumen CDV studio portrait of Thaddeus Stevens. Henzey & Co., Philadelphia, PA. N.d. Publisher's imprint and advertising statement to mount verso.
A three-quarter bust view of the member of the House of Representatives, Thaddeus Stevens. Stevens is shown facing forward in formal attire, wearing a dark coat with broad lapels, a waistcoat, and a neatly tied silk tie.
A prominent leader of the abolitionist movement, Stevens used his position representing Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives to fiercely advocate and defend the rights of Black Americans. After Emancipation, he was deeply involved in the passage of the Reconstruction Acts, as well as the impeachment effort of President Andrew Johnson, in part due to Johnson's failure to uphold these acts.
