Christian August Jorgensen (Norwegian/American, 1860–1935)

Untitled (Yosemite Falls)

1919

Charcoal on paper

Signed and dated lower left

21 1/2 x 17 inches, framed to 25 x 20 1/4 inches.

A stunning depiction of Yosemite Falls, the highest waterfall in Yosemite National Park. The composition is centered on falls cascading down colossal cliffs, framed by equally towering conifers. A small figure and their dog stand on a rocky outcrop, emphasizing the tremendous scale of the vista.

Christian "Chris" August Jorgenson (1860-1935) was a Norwegian-born painter who emigrated to San Francisco when he was a child. His talent was recognized early, and he was mentored by California artists Virgil Williams and Thomas Hill. He is best known for his works capturing the Yosemite Valley, which he first visited in 1898. He subsequently received permission from the Yosemite Commission to construct and operate a studio in the valley itself. He lived and painted there sporadically between 1900 and 1917.
