Fiske's Photographs of Yosemite Valley Summer and Winter...Gustav Fagersteen, For Seven Summers in Yosemite Valley. Printed directory leaf. [San Francisco, California?]: N.p., circa mid-1880s. 8vo. Matted.
An original printed leaf from a California directory prominently advertising two of the most significant early resident photographers in Yosemite, George Fiske (1835-1918) and Gustav Fagersteen (1829-1889). The page is bordered by perimeter advertisements for San Francisco and Sacramento businesses, including Nathan Joseph (Song and Dance Shoes, wigs, spangles), H. Wachhorst (Sterling Silverware, Sacramento), Geo. H. Fuller (Invalid's Chairs and Supplies), and La Grande Laundry.
George Fiske and Gustav Fagersteen were key figures in establishing permanent photographic studios directly on the floor of Yosemite Valley. Fagersteen arrived in the valley around the late 1870s and operated his famous open-air studio with Yosemite Falls as a natural backdrop. Fiske became the first photographer to establish year-round residency in 1879. Directory advertisements directly marketing their field galleries are exceedingly scarce and would complement any advanced western photography collection.
