Carleton E. Watkins (1829–1916) was not only the preeminent landscape photographer of the American West, but also the foremost recorder of its burgeoning industrial infrastructure. In the early 1870s, the North Bloomfield Gravel Mining Company commissioned Watkins to document their monumental hydraulic operations at Malakoff Diggings, then the largest hydraulic gold mine in the world. Watkins’ camera captured both the technological ingenuity and the catastrophic environmental upheaval of mountainsides being blasted away by water cannons, years before the landmark 1884 Sawyer Decision banned the dumping of hydraulic tailings into California rivers. Stereoview suites from this specific industrial survey represent a high-water mark of 19th-century documentary photography.

Very good to fine condition overall. The albumen prints exhibit tonal richness and exceptional sharpness, showing faint, scattered dusting and minor handling wear along the card perimeters. Mounts remain flat, rigid, and structurally sound.
