A grouping of 14 stereoviews of Yellowstone National Park by F. Jay Haynes (28 October 1853-10 March 1921), ca. 1870s-80s. From two series, one of which comes with an original "Yellowstone National Park Stereoscopic Views" box, approx. 7 x 4 1/4 x 1/2 in. Both series on similar beige cards with imprints to mount recto. Images from the "Yellowstone National Park" series include a printed description of the park and series, as well as a provenance stamp, to mount verso.
Haynes first learned photography from S.C. Graham in 1873 in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. Three years later, he was chosen by the Northern Pacific Railroad to produce views for the company's promotional purposes, in which every photo in this lot were created at least in part for. He opened his Fargo, Dakota Territory, studio in 1879, which is where all of the N.P.R.R. photographs have imprints from. Then, during the 1880s, Haynes took photos of Yellowstone, three of which are included in this lot.
In addition to taking photographs of the N.P.R.R. and Yellowstone, he was also contracted to document the Canadian Pacific Railway and traveled through Alaska for the Puget Sound and the Steam Ship Line. With regards to Yellowstone, Haynes became the official photographer for President Chester Arthur's trip to the park and was given permission to open a photographic concession at the Mammoth Hot Springs.
