A family archive of the Pascal and Caldwell families featuring World War I material, highlighted by two typed letters signed by Franklin Delano Roosevelt as Secretary of the Navy.

The archive includes papers related to Eugene Pascal (1868-1940), descended from the Caldwell Family on his mother’s side, and his wife, Grace B. Roberts Pascal (1870-1942), descended from the Roberts Family (see Lots 224 & 226). The archive includes correspondence and ephemera from both, as well as items related to both their ancestors and descendants.

Of special interest are letters and documents from the family’s involvement in World War I. Eugene Pascal evidently responded to calls from the Navy requiring telescopes and binoculars. For his donations, he received two letters SIGNED BY FRANKLIN DELANO ROOSEVELT, as Secretary of the Navy (29 March 1918 and 28 December 1917): “Your prompt and patriotic response to the NAVY’S call for binoculars is most appreciated…At the termination of the war if possible, every effort will be made to return them to you, when it is hoped that you will feel compensated for any evidence of wear by the knowledge that you have supplied 'Eyes for the NAVY' during a very trying period.”

Their son Edward W. Washington (1899-1962) enlisted in the US Navy during the War and served on both the USS Artemis and USS Arcturus. He wrote to his parents on 25 March 1918 from the USS Artemis, “Willie Moore is… holding half of the seaman money until the end of the war. That was only done to Gen. Pershing away in France. The American soldiers get $30 a month with no expense, and naturally spend their money freely, and the dealers taking advantage of this.”

The archive includes a large group (approx. 75) of photographs, including tintypes, cartes de visite, cabinet cards, and unmounted snapshots. Many family members are identified by modern inscriptions to versos. The group includes three portraits of men in military uniform that seem to have been taken in the late 19th century during the Spanish-American War.

Also included are correspondence related to both Eugene & Grace as well as 19th-century ephemera from both families.

A nice collection of manuscripts and photographs of a family at the turn of the century.
