José Ferre-Clauzel (Spanish, b. 1961)

Military Action by the Blue Division

Oil on canvas

Signed to lower left.

11 1/2 x 11 1/2 in., framed to 18 x 18 in.

A painting depicting three Blue Division Spanish soldiers in battle, two charging forward and one lying down, possibly killed in action. The Spanish flag can be seen on all three men's helmets and shoulders.

The Blue Division, formerly known as the 250th Infantry Division, consisted of volunteers from Francoist Spain fighting alongside Nazi Germany on the Eastern Front during World War II. This alliance spanned from the Spanish Civil War, where the Nazis supported the Nationalists and Francisco Franco's rise to power in Spain. The Blue Division served on the Eastern Front from 1941-1943, in which as many as 45,000 Spaniards volunteered.

Born in France to a Spanish painter father and a Portuguese mother, Ferre-Clauzel showed an aptitude for art at a young age. He attended the ABC School of Fine Arts in Paris and continued to work at the Torras Studio in Spain. His work has been sold and showcased all over the world.
