Nikolai Fedorovich Denisovskii (1901-1981)
"ГОСУДАРСТВЕННЫЙ ДЕЯТЕЛЬ" СОВРЕМЕННОЙ ГЕРМАНИИ [A "Statesman of Modern Germany"]
[Soviet Union]
N.p.,
1944
Approx. 34 x 66 in.
A ghoulish figure in uniform stands knee-deep in a red sea of carnage as hands descend to bestow him an Iron Cross. The horrific scene effectively conveys the horrors of the Holocaust. They were witnessed firsthand by Soviet troops in late July 1944 when they captured Lublin and liberated the Majdanek concentration camp. Although the camp had been evacuated and over 1,000 people forcibly marched to Auschwitz (of whom only half survived the march), the Red Army still found thousands of prisoners, mostly prisoners of war, and evidence of the systematic mass murder. The first of the camps to be liberated, the revelations of the extent of the Nazi's brutality were widely publicized.
The poster includes a quote from the newspaper Krasnaya Zvezda [Red Star] (in translation): "The Lublin camp, with its deliberate and terrifyingly methodical technique of exterminating people, once again confirms with enormous force the STATE-ORIENTED nature of the German organization of mass murder and torture."
