[Algiers, Algeria?], 10 October 1943. 1p, 6 x 8 in. On "Allied Force Headquarters / Office of the Commander-in-Chief" letterhead. Letter reads, in full: "My dear Mr. Stillwell: It was very thoughtful of you to send me your best wishes as typical of an average American. The soldiers overseas are so dependent on the support they receive from the people at home that it is particularly reassuring to know that you are all buying bonds, and working tirelessly to provide the material they must have to win the war. Sincerely, [Signed] Dwight D. Eisenhower."
Eisenhower signed this appreciative letter to an American citizen while overseeing operations in the Mediterranean. Two months later, he would be tapped to lead Operation Overlord, the Allied invasion of Western Europe.
A war-date letter from one of the most important Allied generals of WWII and a future president.
