Full-length silver gelatin studio portrait. N.p., ca. 1880-1920. Visible approx. 17 3/4 x 12 in., framed to 20 x 26 in.
A handsome studio portrait of a young Black man seated in a chair with his leg crossed and hands clasped over his knee. Staring earnestly at the camera, he is dressed in a wide-brimmed hat and leather chaps, with a handkerchief scarf tied around his neck. A rope looped around his shoulder suggests he may have been a cowboy or ranch hand.
Portraits of the Black diaspora that migrated into the western frontier after the War are very scarce, and this large-format portrait is a fine example.
