Full-length studio portrait of two young sportsmen surrounded by myriad trophy mounts. Albumen cabinet card. Davenport, Washington: A. Hugo Albrecht, ca. 1890s-early 1900s. Photographer's imprint to mount recto.
A visually packed studio composition featuring two proud Pacific Northwest hunters posed behind a collection of North American wildlife mounts. The gentleman on the left wears a fedora, neckerchief, cartridge vest, and jacket, resting his hand on an upright double-barrel shotgun. His companion stands at right in a cap and embroidered hunting vest, holding a rifle barrel. Arranged meticulously in front of them is a dense exhibition of taxidermy specimens, including a trophy mule deer shoulder mount, multiple deer heads, bobcats, red foxes, badgers, coyotes, a snowy owl, a great horned owl with wings spread, a small screech owl, and waterfowl.
Studio portraits celebrating hunting culture and the taxidermist's craft were popular on the Western frontier, serving both as personal trophies and promotional showcases for local furriers and preparators. Studio photographers in small agricultural and frontier towns like Davenport, located in Lincoln County in eastern Washington's Big Bend country, constructed elaborate multi-tiered sets to accommodate these complex and ambitious still-life arrangements.
