Horseman's saber. [Maryland: George] Riggs (hilt), ca. 1810.

 

A rare, early American-made saber.

 

33 1/2 in. single-edged blade with a 27 in. stopped median fuller and a narrow, 16 5/8 in. fuller along the back edge which terminates in a 9 7/8 in. false edge. Sword is overall 39 inches. Silver hilt, with 4-slotted D guard and knucklebow marked "RIGGS" to knucklebow interior and an ovoid pommel. Lacquered ebony grip with 12 wraps of twisted wire. Original fabric washer. Blade unmarked.

 

The blade exhibits very light pitting. The silver guard is slightly tarnished and there is a break and bow to one side. 

 

George Washington Riggs (1777 - 1864) worked as a silversmith in Georgetown and Baltimore from ca. 1800 to 1848. He is known to have hilted swords for use during the War of 1812.
