The paper itself was significant and for many years a prominent voice of the
Republican (sometimes Radical Republican) party in the country. It began when Franklin’s grandson, Benjamin Franklin Bache, inherited Franklin’s printing presses.
The paper was established by Benjamin Franklin Bache (1769-1798), who inherited printing presses from his grandfather. Bache supported Jeffersonian philosophy and used his paper to attack John Adams and the Federalists. After Bache's death from yellow fever, the paper passed to Irish-American William Duane (1760-1835), who continued the strong pro-Democratic-Republican and pro-Jefferson stance.
During the War of 1812, Duane became concerned about the British policy of recruiting fugitive American slaves into the British military, predicting that by offering the enslaved liberty they were seeking to set the anti-slavery North against the pro-slavery South.
This exceptional assemblage was purchased from the estate collection of William Guthman, owner of one of the finest collections of Americana print and manuscript material gathered in the modern era. Not an unbroken run by any means, but a formidable assemblage. Please note that it was published on a rather eclectic schedule, at times being less than once a week, and at times days in a row for weeks
