Collection of 8 albumen print stereoviews on publisher cardstock mounts from Captain Andrew Joseph Russell’s seminal series "Union Pacific R.R. Views Across the Continent, West from Omaha" and "Union Pacific R.R. Stereoscopic Views". Published by A.J. Russell & Co., New York, with prominent calligraphic series backmarks and printed comprehensive catalog checklists across versos. Ca. 1868 - 1870. Each approx. 4 x 7 in.

A cornerstone grouping of early transcontinental railroad stereoviews captured by Captain A.J. Russell while serving as the official documentary photographer for the Union Pacific Railroad. Russell was the only active-duty military photographer of the Civil War to transition directly into documenting the race to Promontory Summit, creating the primary visual record of the railroad's dramatic traverse through the badlands of Wyoming and the jagged defiles of Utah. The lot includes:

1. Exterior view looking across the canyon slope toward the precarious stone shelf jutting over the canyon, with figures resting beneath the overhang. Manuscript notation on verso "Hanging Rock Looking up Echo Canon."

2. No. 120 Stage Station, head of Echo Canon. Exterior view of the small stage station and outbuilding with horses and wagons.

3. 307. Monument Rock, Echo Kanyon. Exterior view of the massive Monument Rock rising up in the near distance.

4. Exterior view of a well-dressed group of men and women posed with rising cliffs in the background. Manuscript notation on verso identities the view as "No. 315. / Vice Pres. Colfax & party at Echo." Image captures Vice President Schuyler Colfax and his entourage during a celebratory tour of the Transcontinental Railroad.

5. Exterior view looking down the canyon approach framed by layered cliffs and newly placed telegraph poles.

6. No. 338. Snake Head Rock, Echo City. Exterior view of a towering, free-standing rock rising sharply above the canyon.

7. No. 390. Finger Rock, Weber Kanyon. Exterior view of the unique rock formation known as Finger Rock wit riverbed in the background.

8. 1000 Mile Tree and Excursion Party. Exterior view showing a large group of finely dressed men, women, and children gathered alongside the railroad tracks beneath a tree with a hanging sign "1000 Mile Tree."

As the official photographic record of the Union Pacific's westward thrust, Russell's field views represent defining documentary monuments of 19th-century American engineering and western settlement.
