Two uncommon cabinet card views by M. E. Jacobson of San Antonio.
Each is numbered and titled with Jacobson's imprint in negative. Each with Jacobson's No.2 East Houston Street imprint, with extensive advertising copy and the series title "Picturesque San Antonio" to mount verso, though with different designs and copy. View include:
1. 308. Our Mexican Citizens. San Antonio, Texas: M.E. Jacobson, 1889-1891.
A family stands outside a log-built house with a thatched roof. The man standing on the left holds a muzzle-loading percussion rifle, possibly an Enfield Rifle.
2. 24. The Granary at the Mission San José. San Antonio, Texas: M.E. Jacobson, 1889-1891.
Known as the "Queen of Missions," San José Mission was founded in the San Antonio River Valley in 1720. It ceased operations in 1824, but the structures remained as tourist attractions.
The photographer M.E. Jacobson is identified as Mary E. Jacobson (fl. 1889-1893) by Mautz, though she probably worked with her husband, M.E. Jacobson. Probably German immigrants, advertising in the German-language San Antonio newspaper Freie Presse fur Texas on 4 January 1890 touts that "Herr M.E. Jacobson has the only German photographic studio in San Antonio."
Several articles from the San Antonio Express-News also report on M.E. Jacobson, identifying him as a man: "Mr. M.E. Jacobson, the artistic photographer, had the pleasure of photographing the drummers yesterday, in the Main hall at exposition grounds...The studio of this well-known and popular artist is located at No. 2 East Houston Street, near the iron bridge, where views of the old missions, the Alamo, government buildings and grounds, together with many other views of historic value and beauty can be had, all executed in the best style known to the photographer's art." (12 November 1889, page 3). The 1891 San Antonio directory, however, explicitly records Mary E. Jacobson at 2 E. Houston as a "Photographer." The studio at 2 East Houston St. was in operation from 1889-1891, before they moved to a studio at 113 North Alamo.
