Partly printed document completed in manuscript signed by Francis R. Lubbock (1815-1905), as Governor of Texas. Austin, Texas, 23 September 1863. 1 page, approx. 17 x 14 in.
An officer's commission for Robert Oliphant, a Second Lieutenant in Company B of Morgan's Texas Cavalry Battalion. The document notes that "Robert Oliphint was elected to the office of 2nd Lieutenant of a Cavalry Company in the 4th Batallion T.S. Troops. in response to the call of the Governor for 10,000 men" in Panola County on 27 July, 1863.
The Battalion served as part of Parson's Brigade in the Trans-Mississippi Department, but the companies generally operated independently and rarely fought together. As reflected by the nomenclature used here, the formation of the Battalion was a conglomeration of several independent companies.
The commission is further enhanced by the signature of Texas Governor Francis Lubbock (1815-1905). He served as the 9th Governor from 1861 to 1863. A strong supporter of the Confederacy, he was instrumental in Texas's secession from the Union.
A nice Texas commission.
