A fine postwar portrait of a Texas horse soldier aboard his mount. Identified as Private Joseph Harris Mason, who enlisted as a private on 1 September 1862 into Company D of the 20th Texas Cavalry. Assigned to the Trans-Mississippi Department, the regiment spent most of the war in Indian Territory and Arkansas, where it skirmished with Union troops, including at the Battle of Honey Springs on 17 July 1863.
