A letter with instructions for the care of people enslaved as they were transported to Pensacola, Florida Territory, specifically naming the 1st Territorial Governor of Florida, William Pope Duvall (1784-1854), among other notable Floridians.
The letter reads in part: "I sincerely request you + Mr. Sproke to make sure to play with my negores & send them fast and carry them bound to Charleston, or some of them will be sure to run away from you. I request you to be sure to enter them in the Custom House or you will forfeit them. Be pleased to request Mr. Sproke, benefit them with clothes and provisions to carry them to Pensacola and direct them to Governor William P. Duvall, Florida and of Mayor Bouton, or Captain Burch, Pensacola. I request you to be good enough to request Mr. Joseph Smoltz to bargain with the Captain of the vessel and pay him for the freight of my goods and negroes and of the funds he has in hand belonging to me." He continues with further requests to help settle his affairs.
