Partly printed document completed in manuscript. Lawrence County, Alabama, 10 October 1850. 1 page, folio, 7 1/2 x 12 1/4 in. Docketed to verso.

An extremely rare, partly printed court document for a lawsuit settlement that includes "a certain negro" in the judgment against Paul J. Watkins.

The complete judgement specifies that Watkins owes William Dearing "[$1670.96] adjudged to William Dearing [$800] of which is on condition that said Watkins does not deliver to said Dearing a certain negro sued for in this cause for Damages."

Also notably, the document includes an extensive, itemized list of clerk's and sheriff's fees.

Alabama documents are unusual, and we have rarely seen printed documents in slavery-related cases.

[Civil War, Union, Confederate] [African Americana, African American History, Black History, Slavery, Enslavement, Abolition, Emancipation]  [Manuscripts, Documents, Letters, Ephemera, Signatures, Autographs]
