1784 GEORGIA HEADRIGHT LAND PETITION CLAIMING 300 ACRES “ON THE HEAD RIGHTS OF HIMSELF AND TWO NEGROES”

 

Partly printed document completed in manuscript. Signed by Gilbert Clark. Augusta, Washington County, Georgia, 5 June 1784. 1 page, approx. 8 1/4 x 7 in., docketed to verso. 

 

A document submitted by Gilbert Clarke, a citizen of North Carolina who petitioned the President and members of the Georgia Council for 300 hundred acres of land in Washington County, "on the Head Rights of himself + Two Negroes". 

 

The petitioner may be Gilbert Clark (1767-1819), who was originally from Cumberland, North Carolina. He maintained his household in North Carolina, but also held land in eastern Georgia. The 1790 census notes that he enslvaed 6 individuals, rising to 10 by 1800.
