The Roger Williams Silver Company
Sculpture of a mare and foal
Sterling Silver
Early 20th Century (pre-1914)
Stamped with an overlapping "RW," the mark of the Roger Williams Silver Company, to one side of the base and "The Cowell & Hubbard Co" to the other
Approx. 14 1/2 x 6 x 8 1/4 inches
Based in Rhode Island, the Roger Williams Silver Co. were primarily flatware and hollowware producers, making this sculpture an interesting artistic departure. Pieces bearing the Roger Williams Silver Co. mark can be dated between the company's inception in 1901 and 1914, at which point it merged with the Mauser Mfg. Co. and Hayes & MacFarland to form the Mount Vernon Company Silversmiths.
Cowell and Hubbard Co., the sculpture's retailers, were the first jewelry store to operate in Cleveland, Ohio. The flagship store received widespread acclaim, and the company operated from the 1860s well into the late 20th Century. Many extant silver pieces bear the retailers' stamp.
