Reproduction of a Sharps 1859 rifle. Half stock single-shot falling-block breech-loading rifle. .54 caliber, black powder only. Reproducer's mark on barrel. Serial number 48804, stamped behind hammer. Barrel octagonal and 28 in. long. Overall length 46 in.
There is considerable bluing on the butt plate, receiver, and trigger, but the barrel reflects a nice black patina. There are additional stamps of icons on the receiver underneath the barrel's caliber indication. A modern orange rubber stopper has been placed to soften the hammer's landing. The stock exhibits a checkerboard pattern underneath the barrel and on the butt of the rifle. There is both an open front sight and a peep sight in the rear.
This reproduction was made by Industria Armi Bresciane in Gardone, Val Trompia, Italy. Founded in 1965 by Fabio Zanotti, this company not only makes hunting and competition shotguns, but also reproductions of black-powder, rigid-barrel guns dating to before 1890, like this rifle.
