A handsome portrait of the prominent American genre and narrative painter Toby Edward Rosenthal (1848-1917) captured in an elegant oval format. Rosenthal is shown in a three-quarter bust view, attired in a heavy double-breasted woolen coat with wide peak lapels, a crisp white collar, dark necktie with a stickpin, and a stylish handlebar mustache. Inscribed in August 1879 during one of his celebrated return visits to San Francisco from Munich, this presentation card is affectionately inscribed to a member of the prominent Baum family, likely early San Francisco patrons and social acquaintances.
Rosenthal was raised in San Francisco during the Gold Rush era and displayed exceptional artistic talent as a young boy, studying under Mexican portraitist and landscape artist Fortunato Arriola (1827-1872). In 1865, backed by San Francisco patrons, he traveled to Europe to train at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich under Karl von Piloty (1826-1886). Rosenthal achieved international renown for his dramatic literary and historical narrative canvases, most famously Elaine (1874), which caused a sensation when exhibited in San Francisco and was briefly stolen from the gallery in a notorious art heist.
Thomas Houseworth & Co. was one of the premier photographic and optical firms in 19th-century California, operating from prestigious galleries at 9 and later 12 Montgomery Street in San Francisco. Houseworth documented the rapid development of early California, mining scenes, Yosemite landscapes, and prominent figures of the Bay Area cultural and artistic community.
