An extremely rare and important view of the destruction from the 1868 Hayward Earthquake, which struck the San Francisco Bay Area on 21 October 1868. Though later eclipsed in the popular imagination by the 1906 earthquake, the 1868 event was extremely violent and caused widespread damage. A rare view of the destruction. This example supplements the image on the online catalogue The Photographs of Carleton Watkins.
