A fine portrait of James T. Brown, a trumpeter from Newkirk, Oklahoma Territory, who served in Troop D of Theodore Roosevelt's famed Rough Riders. Brown stands proudly with his trumpet pressed against his leg. A large knife is sheathed on his belt with a "US" plate. The portrait was taken in late May or June 1898 in Tampa, Florida. From there the regiment departed for Cuba, where they saw glory at the Battle of San Juan Hill.
